Phaptawan's Backyard Hospitality

Yvonne Low and I were the most recent recipients of Phaptawan's backyard hospitality when she surprised us with marmalade made from the orange trees at her home in Dulwich Hill. Phaptawan has been offering her backyard as a site for care from as early as the 1990s, when she hosted Womanifesto picnics there.

I was realised the significance of this space when it came up again in conversation between her, Varsha Nair, Eileen Legaspi Ramirez and John Tain, 'Backyards and Neighbourhoods: Feminist Strategies and Communities', recorded during Asia Art Archives' 2020 'Crafting Communities' program.

This is brief excerpt from that conversation. I'm going to make some marmalade toast and watch it again.
